It really doesn’t matter what you’re trying to achieve, hypnotherapy can be a very effective treatment. From quitting smoking to dealing with phobias or losing weight, hypnotherapy can deliver rapid results; the benefits are clear. The question that remains is just how to find a good hypnotherapist?
As with any type of therapy, the results you get from hypnotherapy can vary depending on who you see. Therefore it’s a good idea to spend some time making sure that the hypnotherapist you choose is a good fit for you.
How to find a good hypnotherapist
In a lot of ways the process of choosing a good hypnotherapist is very similar to the one you would undertake to find a good doctor or other health professional. Asking your friends or colleagues can be a good way to get recommendations and you may be very surprised by the number of people you encounter who have seen a hypnotherapist!
You’ll want to make sure that the person you see has some kind of certification in the field of hypnotherapy. If a person has been certified by an industry body such as the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) or the CNHC you can be sure that they have been through rigorous training.
Consider your working relationship.
Although hypnotherapy is considered to be a ‘brief therapy’ you will probably be working with your chosen hypnotherapist for while. Most commonly a period of weeks to months (3 – 8 sessions depending on why you’ve come). Therefore, once you’ve established that they are qualified, the most important thing to establish is how comfortable you are with them. Can you communicate openly and honestly with them? Will you get along with them? The relationship between a therapist and a client is known as the ‘therapeutic alliance’. Research shows this is the strongest predictor of obtaining a successful outcome from therapy.
You can employ lots of different methods to try and find out about a therapist. Perhaps the easiest method is to arrange to have a chat with them. Therefore go with your gut instincts, do you think that they are open and engaging? Did you feel listened to and understood? Importantly, how accessible are they? Can you get in touch with them easily and are they responsive to your questions and concerns?
Finding the right hypnotherapist feel like a challenge, but it is important factor for the success of your therapy. Therefore, make sure that you feel comfortable with them and the techniques that they use. Consequently you’ll find your working relationship more productive. I hope this brief guide was a help explaining how to find a good hypnotherapist.
